Nilekani describes in his treatise that despite good intentions and astonishing idealism, our early socialist policies stifled growth and weakened our democracy. India’s large and overwhelmingly young population has now become our greatest strength; information technology is revolutionising not just business but also governance in the everyday life of a vast majority of Indians; rapid urbanisation is transforming both our society and our politics. Nilekani talks about how the ability of Indian innovation to create high quality, high volume, and low-cost solutions is unique.
It can actually be seen in our mobile phone industry; we are seeing that in education now. Because necessity is the mother of invention, when you still want to build a business model, the only way to do it is by creating.
Apart from handling other responsibilities, Nilekani is also the President of the National Council of applied Economic Research, a member of the National Knowledge Commission and the review committee of the Jawaharlal Nehru National Advisory Group on e-Governance, and he is also the Chairman of the Government of India’s IT Task Force for Power. He was awarded one of India’s highest civilian honours, the Padma Bhushan, in 2006. Nilekani is firmly of the view that the approach to be applied to India’s various problems has to be updated into a far more wide-ranging mix of fresh, new policy ideas. Only then will our country be in a position to address the gritty, real-life concerns of its billion-plus citizens.
The famous statesman Minocher Rustom Masani or Minoo Masani, as everyone from his friends to his voters knew him, was among India’s first truly liberal thinkers, and a deeply underrated statesman. His writings on India started out as optimistic, but later he despaired of the direction the country was headed both politically and economically. He wrote, ‘If India is to saved, it will have to be saved by the small man’.
